Automatic Garage Door
An automatic garage door is one of the largest moving pieces in a home. It consists of a door opener which uses a small electric engine to open and close the door as well as a radio controlled remote. When the button on the remote is pressed it sends a signal to the unit in the garage which ‘hears’ the frequency, recognizes it and opens or closes the door.
The automatic garage door of the past had a problem with opening up other people’s garage doors. One person would close their garage and it would open their neighbors, then when they closed theirs it would open the first one. This was quickly remedied by giving each remote 256 separate codes so it was unlikely that the neighbor would have the same code. This was still not very secure as the code always remained the same and could be easily scanned.
The next feature in automatic garage door security was the addition of rolling code technology. Every time the button is pressed an algorithm produces a new code to send to the receiver. The opener runs the same algorithm and produces the same code so there is no chance of someone scanning for a code and having it actually work. This makes them more secure than door locks.
