Garage Door Remotes

Garage door remotes allow the owner to open and close the door from their car. This saves a lot of time and effort on the part of the driver while still being a very cheap addition. The remote uses a radio frequency to send a code that engages the door to either open or close. It requires batteries to power it but it is a low drain device and should last for years without needing to change the batteries.

Garage door remotes were developed right after World War Two. The technology already existed in remotely detonated bombs and quickly converted over to the public realm. At first the signal was simple but that had the tendency to open and close other garage doors in the area. A code is now used to differentiate between different garage door openers.

Garage door remotes now use a rolling code that is supposedly impossible to break. The remote and the opener are synced with a logarithm that rolls the code to a different set of numbers every time the door is opened and closed. Since the remote and the opener start with the same kernel they produce the same codes which even if they are discovered are already different. This makes them safer than door locks in many situations.
