Wooden Garage Door

A wooden garage door has a certain sense of charm that is lacking in most metal and composite doors. They evoke the feeling of a carriage house more than a typical garage. They can be complexly carved, worked and finished to produce a wide variety of looks and finishes. One of the most popular woods is cedar because it weathers very well but redwood, oak, and hemlock are also good.

The downside to a wooden garage door is its cost and maintenance. They are expensive, heavy, and have to be taken care of to last for years and years. Every year they should be lightly sanded and refinished with a quality sealant. This should be done in the spring for the best results. All the joints and connections should be checked for stress fractures, loose screws and other mechanical problems.

A wooden garage door is not very good at insulating either. In wet weather they can swell in their frame so tight the door cannot be opened and in the winter they have the tendency to be drafty. It is still possible to insulate a wooden door but they lose their aesthetic appeal. They are still widely popular especially on higher end homes.
